Over the past few days I have really contemplated what some of my favorite movies are and have been throughout my life. I was watching some trailers the other day and it just made me nostalgic for some of the movies that have made my cry, laugh, and feel really freaking good.
This is all I could really come up with right now – I’m sure this will change.
10. The Princess Bride
Classic. I mean, not only is it one of the most quotable movies ever to exist but it has everything you want. Its just an all around solid movie.
9. Juno
Really strong, sarcastic, girl main character. I love the comments, plot, and the music is amazing with this awesome movie. And this is coming from someone who despises Jennifer Garner.
8. Hedwig and the Angry Inch
Awesome plot, awesome music, and some very serious acting from John Cameron Mitchell. Not only did he write and direct it, but seriously… acting as well? Ambitious. Catchy. And the music stays in your heads for days.
7. Snatch
I love movies that are highly stylized. Guy Richie has such an amazingly directorial style. I even own the soundtrack to the amazing movie. I love the plot, I love the actors, and Brad Pitt looks FREAKING HOT with the tattoos and awesome body. This is one of the movies I have watched over and over again.
6. Monsters Inc.
I am a Pixar whore. Honestly, almost everything they put out is phenomenal. They basically shit gold (except I’m the only person in the world who thought Nemo was overrated and I hated Cars). Monsters Inc is my favorite Pixar movie of all time. The plot is innovative and doesn’t follow the traditional story guidelines. The monsters are creative and fun, and most of all, Sully’s hair was AMAZING for that time period in CG.
5. The Big Lebowski
The Cohen brothers. That pretty much sums it up. Interesting dialog. Characters with strange depth to them. Jokes are subtle. And The Dude. And who doesn’t like movies that refer to nihilists? “Comedies” take alot to keep me interested and I think this is one of the best out there. “Nobody fucks with the Jesus.”
4. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
Wes Anderson is one of my most favorite directors out there at the moment. His dry wit and dialogue are engaging and interesting. Yes, I love intellectual humor. His cast is always top notch and this is another soundtrack that I own and listen to ALOT. The creatures are imaginative and add a spark to this already amazing film… and of course… Bill Murray. I think he may be my favorite actor. Ever. I find that as he has gotten older, his acting has gotten more refined.
***NOTE***
The following movies are both listed as my #2. I can’t decide between them due to the fact they mean so much to me.
2. Amelie
I already love to watch foreign films. Just because of this film Audrey Tatou made me watch every other movie she has been in regardless of the fact some were not that great. Another soundtrack I own and I always find it strange that I am jamming out to accordions. This is an amazingly beautiful film. Always so warm – I wish I could sit down with the lighting guy and the director of photography to figure out how they did it. Stylized. Beautiful. I cried at the ending. Amelie reminds me a bit of myself.
2. Lost in Translation
I will be the first to admit, when I first saw this movie, I did not like it. At all. I made myself sit down for a second viewing when it happened. I got it. I got the point of the movie and was blown away at my reaction to it. It wasn’t about the plot. It was about the relationships of two people within the realm of the movie. I loved how subtle everything was. I thought it was one of Bill Murray’s greatest performances. Solid, solid movie.
1. Nightmare Before Christmas
Like that is a big surprise. I have Oogy Boogy freaking tattooed on my arm. I got this on VHS when I was 12 and I nearly killed it with how many times I watched it. I popped it into an old VCR somewhat recently and you cannot imagine the amount of snow on it HAHA. Tim Burton IS my favorite director. Again – STYLE STYLE STYLE. I love things that are different and he created a masterpiece. Imaginative. Beautiful songs and AMAZING MONSTERS (I like monsters so sue me).
